What could be causing the death of dolphins in the oil enclave of Ghana; a possible oil spill?

Over the weekend, there were news of many dead dolphins washed ashore along Ghana’s Coast line. Some of them we understand, are dead. Others too are alive but very weak.

Several dolphins have been pictured lying on these shores, from Axim to Ankobra.

According to reports, some residents have already cut some of the dolphins into pieces and taken to the market to sell.

A very worrying situation, it is.

Cape Coast-based journalist who has keen interest in aquatic reporting, Mary Ama Bawa, who was amongst the very first few people to break this news on Facebook, described the situation as worrying, and needing immediate attention.

“Fact checked-True. This situation requires urgent attention and investigation by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture. My sources say the incident happened this afternoon between Brewurea and Ankobra, close to the sea defence project in Axim. These dolphins are still alive but unable to swim. Nine of these are currently at Apewosika beach in Axim,” she wrote.

According to her, residents of the area have already raised concerns of a possible oil spill on the high seas which they belief could be a cause of what is happening.

“Just about two months ago, residents of Axim and Half Assini raised concerns of oil spill on the sea surface which they believe may have dire consequences on aquatic life.

“They were also apprehensive that sea weeds have inundated the shores of many coastal communities in Western and Greater Accra regions. Are these events related? May be, or may be not,” she wrote.

Sources close to westernghnews.com say residents in these areas believe there is need for an immediate investigations into these dolphins being washed ashore – a situation that some say has never happened before.

Other people have also  indicated that some strange things have been happening that authorities need to help explain.

“There is this strange happenings on our coasts that needs immediate investigations and a quick solution. The picture below is Axim, where these dolphins were brought offshore by the sea, same happened at capecoast yesterday and some strange fishes appeared on the shores of Accra. What is the actual problem?” a Facebook user posted.

So what could probably be the cause of what is happening on our coast; a mere coincidence, or the effect of a possible oil spillage that has happened at the blindside of authorities?

One can only hope the latter is not the case. The Authorities; Fisheries Commission, Petroleum Commission and the Ghana Marine Authority must come out quickly to educate the public on what is happening, else the rumours will linger on.

And until that is done, kindly advise your family to watch out for which fish they buy from the market now because we read that the meat of a dolphin is high in Mercury which will pose a threat to human health when consumed.
